Ruehm University Hospital Essen, 45122 Essen, NRW, Germany, Department of Radiology, Crete, Crete, Greece ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to assess MR colonography for the detection of colonic polyps/malignancy. 50 subjects underwent MR colonography prior to conventional colonoscopy. MRC is based on a rectal enema with water in combination with the intravenous application of a paramagnetic contrast agent. MRC correctly identified 20 polyps in 12 patients. Two small polyps seen at colonoscopy were missed by MRC. The MRC concept based on a dark colonic lumen and a bright, contrast enhanced colonic wall appears to be a promising alternative to traditional MRC based on a bright colonic lumen.

Dark lumen magnetic resonance colonography: comparison with conventional colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal pathology.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and usefulness of a new magnetic resonance (MR) colonography technique for the detection of colorectal pathology in comparison with conventional colonoscopy as the standard of reference. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 122 subjects with suspected colorectal disease underwent "dark lumen" MR colonography. A contrast enhanced T1...

The sensitivity of MR colonography using dark lumen technique for detection of colonic lesions.

BACKGROUND/AIMS To assess the detectability of the lesions with magnetic resonance (MR) colonography using dark lumen technique that had been detected on conventional colonoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 38 patients who were suspected to have a colorectal mass between April 2008 and June 2010 were included in this prospective study. Warm tap water was administered via a rectal tube t...

Digital subtraction dark-lumen MR colonography: initial experience.

PURPOSE To evaluate image subtraction for the detection of colonic pathologies in a dark-lumen MR colonography exam. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 20 patients (12 males; 8 females; mean 51.4 years of age) underwent MR colonography after standard cleansing and a rectal water enema on a 1.5-T whole-body MR system. After suppression of peristaltic motion, native and Gd-contrast-enhanced three...

Dark lumen MR colonography: can high spatial resolution VIBE imaging improve the detection of colorectal masses?

PURPOSE To assess whether the detection of colorectal lesions can be improved using high spatial resolution VIBE imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS 48 patients underwent same-day dark lumen MR colonography (MRC) and conventional colonoscopy (CC) as the standard for the detection of colorectal masses. MRC was performed using contrast-enhanced standard and high spatial resolution T1-weighted 3D VIB...
